As infants, we learn to associate images with words, and as we develop; sounds, emotions, concepts, people, places, and so on become interconnected in a web of neural pathways. Our real-world awareness augments as we age, and new associations (or neural pathways) develop between childhood memories and new experiences. It is when these two perspectives mesh that we become truly aware of the evolution of our mental development thus far. This painting captures, symbolically, the moments before and after we become aware of how our selfhood has changed.
